For this project, I designed a poster for World Ocean Day to raise awareness about the planet’s largest natural habitat. World Ocean Day takes place every year on June 8, and its purpose is to inform the public about how our everyday actions impact the ocean.
I’ve always been fascinated by the ocean and concerned about how we are, unfortunately, destroying its marine life by dumping waste and plastic into it. My first instinct was to use an image of planet Earth to highlight the ocean's importance, but this approach has been overused, making it less impactful. To create something more memorable and unique, I decided to take an abstract photography approach. While reflecting on the issue, I found the perfect image while preparing something in my kitchen. It was a dried watermark on a pasta pot lid that, with the right colors and some imagination, could represent the ocean. Using my camera, I zoomed in to capture the image and experimented with different colors until the watermark resembled the Earth and its oceans. The varying shades of blue symbolize the ocean’s water.
The final result was striking. The abstract image clearly represented the Earth and ocean, while the vibrant colors made the poster dynamic and impactful. When displayed in a metro or similar venue, it catches viewers’ attention and raises awareness of this important day.
